A Special Note From Debi

October 12, 2017

Change. So much has happened at the Arts Foundation over the past year, at times it seems hard to keep up!

 

With that change has come stability; stability in our operating model, in our granting, and in our relationships with other community and arts organizations. I am very proud to have been a part of the changes at the Arts Foundation.

 

I now have to share with you that I am stepping down from my position as Executive Director in order to work in another capacity in our community.

 

Tucson is a beautiful place, and the arts are at the core of that beauty. I feel privileged to have worked with you to help assure the arts thrive, and happy to report that our work does not end with my involvement with the Arts Foundation. I will still be working to ensure that there is equity among the voices that tell the stories of who and what we are as Tucsonans.

 

Thank you for your support. We have accomplished a lot together, and there is still more to do!

For 33 years, the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona (formerly Tucson Pima Arts Council) has been advancing artistic expression, civic participation, and equitable economic growth of our diverse community by funding, promoting, and advocating for arts and culture in our region.

Debi Chess Mabie, our incredible Executive Director of the Arts Foundation, has decided to leave to pursue other career interests.There is hardly the space in this EXTRA EXTRA to do justice to the work Debi has done for the Arts Foundation during her tenure here, but in particular, she has provided critical leadership as Tucson Pima Arts Council transitioned to the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona. We thank Debi for her contributions and commitment to the Southern Arizona arts community and the Arts Foundation in particular and wish her much success in her new endeavors.

 

The Arts Foundation Board of Directors will be seeking a permanent Executive Director, a process through which we will continue to keep you informed. In the meantime, the Arts Foundation Board of Directors has named Carol Varney, Director, Strategic Grants and Initiatives at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA), as Acting Executive Director effective November 1, 2017. Prior to joining CFSA, Carol served as the Executive Director of Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) in San Francisco and has an extensive arts background.

The Arts Foundation team will continue to focus on their excellent work to improve the quality of life through ensuring the health and vitality of our artists and cultural facilities in Southern Arizona.  In addition to distributing grants, facilitating public art, and advocacy efforts, this fall we are launching a salon series, continuing the discussion that began at our Arts + Learning convening, presenting at TenWest and more.

We thank you for the work you do in our arts community, and look forward to our continued partnership.
