Arts Congress is one day each year when you can make your voice heard at the State Capitol

Arts and culture advocates, patrons, educators business people and arts leaders gather on one day each year at the State Capitol while the Arizona State Legislature is meeting to speak directly to their state legislators about the importance of support for arts and culture in our state.

NEW Tucson Jazz Festival 
Date of Event: January 11-21, 2018
Enjoy two weeks of jazz programing in Tucson, including the free daylong Downtown Jazz Fiesta on MLK day. NEW Tucson Fringe Festival 
Date of Event: January 12-14, 2018

The Tucson Fringe Festival is an unjuried, uncensored performing arts festival. Following international fringe tenets, the festival provides artists with low-risk, low-cost opportunities to perform by using economies of scale to reduce venue rental costs and by taking 0% of the artist’s earnings. To learn more about this year’s schedule, visit

NEW Bead Conference – Sonoran Glass School in partnership with Ornament Magazine
Date of Event: January 31, 2018 (Reception at 6:30pm, program begins at 7pm)

Event Cost: $5
Presentations will focus on glass beads from antiquity to contemporary practice. Presenters include Linda Sweeney, Floor Kaspers, Robert Liu, Paul Engle, and Tom Holland. For more information, call 520-884-7814.

NEW 17th Annual Flame Off Torchworking competition- Sonoran Glass School (SGS)
Date of Event: February 2, 2018 (7pm)
Event Cost: $20 general admission, $50 VIP
Glass artists from around the world will participate in timed heats inspired by this year’s theme “Assemblage: More than the Sum of its Parts.” Competitors donate their finished pieces to Sonoran Glass School to be bid on by attendees and the general public. Proceeds support the nonprofit Sonoran Glass School and its educational programming. More details here.

Actualizing an Archetype: Narratives Conceived to Survive
Questions the way we tell the story of HIV/AIDS and its effects on our contemporaneous understandings of the disease. Inviting visual and performing artists to submit artwork/proposals that encompass a wide-ranging understanding of how the story of HIV/AIDS can be expressed visually, through the employment, manipulation, and deconstruction of elements of symbols, archetypes, narratives, and mythologies.

Sonoran Seasons – Tohono Chul Park
Deadline: January 16, 2018
Artists from the region are invited to submit 2- or 3-dimensional works in any media for consideration. This exhibition will concentrate on the seasonal changes found in the desert landscape and how its myriad plant and animal species cope with the hot and the cold, the wet and the dry, the dark and the light, and everything in between.

NEW Glass Art Show – Sonoran Glass School
Date of Event: January 31 – February 3, 2018
Hosted in conjunction with the 2018 Tucson Gem & Mineral Show. The show is open to self-representing glass artists (jewelers, bead makers) and space is limited to 40 vendors. The show will overlap with the 17th Annual Flame Off and a Bead Conference held in partnership with Ornament Magazine. $825 for an 8′ table; $1075 for a 10′ x 10′ booth. For more information,

Arizona Biennial 2018 at the Tucson Museum of Art
Deadline: March 2, 2018 (5pm)
All Arizona artists over 18 years of age working in any media are welcome to submit their work to be considered. The oldest running state-wide juried exhibition exclusively featuring Arizona artists, Arizona Biennial 2018 will be on view July 7-October 6, 2018. The work juried into the exhibition will be selected by guest curator Rebecca R. Hart, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Denver Art Museum, entirely from digital images or from video submissions.

NEW Pima County’s Agua Caliente Park Ranch House Art Gallery
Deadline: March 9, 2018
Accepting applications from artists for consideration to display their work during a four-week exhibition period in 2019. Original artwork must reflect nature, wildlife, landscapes, southwestern themes, or local cultures that are in keeping with the park setting. Please submit cover sheet, 6-10 photographs (4″ x 6″ to 8″ x 10″) with labels, a brief resume or biography,  and an artist’s statement and description of work. Living Streets Alliance, in partnership with Downtown Tucson Partnership, offers free and secure bicycle valet parking for attendees of the Downtown Jazz Fiesta to encourage the use of bicycles for transportation.

News & Opps does not announce exhibit openings, fee-based news, programming, workshops or performances, fundraising events, or commercial art venues. News & Opps is a free service based upon received announcements.
