About the Artist

Cheryl Agulnick Hochberg is an Arizona-based printmaker and painter. Her projects explore the idea of "place". She begins her projects by spending time in locations where she is a stranger; where people, ecology, landscape, and wildlife are all unfamiliar. By walking and exploring, she gathers material that becomes her creative content. Cheryl's recent work has been generously supported by Artist Residency opportunities that allow her to work on site and to explore efficiently. In recent years (since 2016), she has worked at Ucross and Jentel Arts in Wyoming, the Guanlan Original Printmaking Base in Shenzhen, China, and the Ratamo Center for Printmaking and Photography in Jyvaskyla, Finland. Particularly well-known for her printmaking, Cheryl has exhibited her relief prints in the 2024 Taiwan International Printmaking Biennial, the3rd International Print Biennial in Yerevan, Armenia, in the Wuhan Biennial (China), and in several exhibitions at the China Printmaking Museum (Shenzhen, China), as well as multiple venues in the US. In 2023, Cheryl's studio practice was highlighted in the Smithsonian Channel's ArtNation "Earthworks" episode. Cheryl was Professor of Art at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania from 1990-2018, chairing the Department of Art and Art History from 2009-1017. She retired in 2018 with Professor Emeritus status.

About this Event

I will be present with my prints and paintings and eager to talk to people about both my ideas and my processes. I make mixed media works on paper, and I also make woodcut prints. But most of my works – paintings and prints – include collaged photos as well.

About the Process

My prints are made by carving plywood blocks. Using a roller, I apply ink to the surface of the wood - what is on the surface prints; what has been cut away does not. The prints are made in multiple layers, with each layer being a different color. Finally, the prints also have photographs subtly collaged into them.
