Meet the Transportation Art By Youth Summer Program

In collaboration with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) and City of Tucson Ward 1, with funding from the Pima Association of Governments (PAG) and the City of Tucson, the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona (Arts Foundation) is pleased to announce Tony Plak as the TABY Teaching Artist! Tony has begun leading an eight-week summer program with youth artists through the public art design process and production of artwork in a public transportation setting.

The artwork production site is located at Rodeo Grounds (4823 S. 6th Avenue). Exact location of the public art work will be confirmed in coordination with the Department of Transportation and Mobility and Parks and Recreation.

Q & A with Tony!

¿Qué fue lo que te atrajo del proyecto de arte TABY?

Es poder hacer un proyecto que impacte mediante la naturaleza. Se van a pintar macetas que ayuden  a contar lo que es la historia del espacio ahi, que es la doce. Y también con la ayuda de los jóvenes, de los youth artists va a poder pasarse a los niños, jóvenes para que agarraren el camino del arte, ya que se les ofrece un chorro  de (muchas) oportunidades ahora a los jóvenes.

¿Cuáles son algunos de tus pensamientos e ideas preliminares para el proyecto?

Poder expresar mediante 12 macetas, hacer un mural continuo que se va poner por donde pasan los carros y que la gente pueda ver un poco de la historia de la doce y del sur de Tucson mediante esas obras de arte.

Al diseño se le va agregar lo que es la vegetación, lo que son los animales, lo que es la comida típica, que es lo que se  ofrece en esa comunidad.

¿Por qué es importante la creación de arte público para nuestra comunidad?

El arte publico es muy importante en la comunidad, donde sea, ya que por medio del arte demuestras la identidad de las personas. Por medio del arte publico vas creando jeroglíficos modernos para la comunidad. Pasan los años y la gente puede ver de qué se trataba el espacio en ese momento.
