CALL TO ARTISTS / ARTIST TEAMS

In collaboration with Pima County, the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona (Arts Foundation) is seeking a qualified Public Artist or Artist Team for commission, through a Request for Qualifications application process (RFQ).

CONSTRUCTION PROJECT TIMELINE

Pima County is currently in the design phase and the design is scheduled to be completed October 2022.  The construction timeframe is anticipated to be between 12-18 months and start December 2022.

Project Description

The new facility will provide the PCOME and staff the appropriate space required to meet the current increased demand and allow for future growth within Pima County and the region.  The design of the new facility will also incorporate current medical examiner trends, including current technology to improve the quality of their services and increase efficiency.  The public interface will be developed to improve the experience as many of these interactions are highly sensitive. The facility will educate visitors to the high number of migrant deaths from crossing the border and the efforts the facility is taking to respectfully identify and return remains.  Via the Indigent Internment Program (IIP), the OME assists provides a proper and dignified disposition of low income or unclaimed decedents.

ARTWORK PLACEMENT

All artwork will be placed within the the interior of the courtyard. The courtyard will be enclosed by a perforated metal fence, will be partially covered by a perforated steel canopy, and is planned to have several large columbaria installed within it.  The artwork may be stand alone or hanging.  The artwork may be potentially installed on or around the columbaria.

ARTWORK BUDGET

The all-inclusive budget of $180,000 for artwork must cover all costs related to: design, materials, production, transportation and installation of the artwork; permits, taxes, and insurance that may be required by the City of Tucson or Pima County; soil analysis, engineering, and mounting for the artwork.

ELIGIBILITY

The Public Art opportunity is open to professional Artists and Artist Teams worldwide. All interested Artists and Artist Teams are encouraged and invited to apply, including but not be limited to individuals or teams who are engaged full-time or part-time in the production of eligible works of art, teachers of art, and emerging professional artists (Pima County Administrative Procedure, 3-16, Section II)

Note: Artist Teams are required to select a team lead as a point of contact for all communications. If selected for the project, team members will need to form an LLC or may designate the team lead as signatory in order to contract with the County. If selecting the team lead as signatory, the County will contract with them directly as the “Vendor/Contractor”. Subcontracting and performance of team members is the exclusive responsibility of the Vendor/Contractor. Artists applying as a member of a team are not eligible to also apply as an individual.
