CTA: Sahuarita Regional Library Public Art Project

CTA: Sahuarita Regional Library Public Art Project

Budget for Artwork: $57,000

Application Deadline: December 1, 2018

Project Description

The new Sahuarita Regional Library to be located in the Town of Sahuarita will be part of the ongoing efforts of the Pima County Public Library to provide services to underserved, growing populations. Considerable effort has gone into defining the need and potential location of a full-service library in the Town of Sahuarita. Over the years, many sites have been considered and studied for the suitability.  The new branch library will replace the existing temporary site which currently utilizes modular buildings, on leased land to provide library services.

The Town of Sahuarita is a diverse area that has recently experienced large growth from new housing and commercial development, but the area has a rich history of Native American people, Spanish occupation, ranching, farming and mining.  Information on Sahuarita’s history is available online.

Opportunities for Art

There are multiple interior or exterior spaces that may suit artwork for the new library. Options include but are not limited to the entry plaza, exterior courtyards, the children’s area, the multipurpose room among others.  The artist is expected to work closely with the selection panel and the design team to determine the location/s and type of artwork to create a successful piece of public art that contributes to the public’s experience at the facility.  Communicating the values and goals of the community and Public Library’s role as a resource to the community are desired.

Art Budget

The budget of $57,000 for art must cover all costs related to design, materials, production, transportation, and installation of the artwork, as well as costs for permits, taxes, and insurance that may be required by the City of Tucson or Pima County. This may include soil analysis, engineering, and foundations.

Project Stats

The 15,000 to 20,000 square foot full-service branch library will be constructed on property adjacent to the main campus of the Sahuarita Unified School District. The property frontage runs along Sahuarita Road, which is a major street within the Town of Sahuarita. This program concept has a mutual educational benefit for both the Pima County Libraries and the Sahuarita Unified School District. The location is in the center of an area of major population density in a town of over 30,000 residents. This cooperative pursuit exemplifies sound practice in finding common ground and leveraging of resources for the greater good of providing excellent services to the community.

The project is currently in the design phase and Pima County has contracted with Line and Space Architects to complete the design.  The design is currently scheduled to be complete September of 2019.

Public Interface and Expectations

The selected artist will work with Pima County’s Project Manager, Design Team and will be expected to attend one or more public meetings to gather information about the community and present the artwork. The artist must meet with the Project Panel organized by the Arts Foundation for review, comment, and approval of the design before entering into production of the artwork.

Selection Process

A panel composed of members of the Project Design team, artists, arts professional, and community members will select up to three finalists from the pool of applicants. Presentations by finalists are tentatively scheduled for February 10, 2019 beginning at 1:00PM. The Arts Foundation is unable to pay travel expenses at this time.

*Preliminary design proposals for this project are not required by applicants or finalists.*
