About Lisa Agababian

Although my fascination with clay started at a very early age, it was decades later that this medium proved to be a lifesaver for me as well. Today, my ”Ceramic heART Wall Sculptures" are colorful expressions of my authentic, raw, naked, vulnerable… strength, as I experience this fabulous, wondrous, and sometimes very scary, and painful, precious, human life. Although I continue to create fine, functional, whimsical wares, my Ceramic Heart Wall Sculptures give a true voice to the whole spectrum of being human and shine with more than a modicum of timelessness and humor as well.
Fleeting moments of intimacy in nature; my experience with the depths of my own being; as well as my great love, compassion, and connection with other sentient beings is what inspires my art. Earthenware clay, a forgiving & friendly medium to work with allows me to express genuinely, intricately, and most exquisitely in ways I could not with another medium or words alone.
The mysterious kiln gods always have a hand in my work which undoubtedly adds to the magic of every piece.

About the Process

My process begins with creating a form with slabs of clay after I've been inspired by an idea for a ceramic heart sculpture. I also use extruders, a potter's wheel, and many other hand tools to make my designs.
Once the form is finished, it must sit on a shelf to become bone-dry before it's loaded into my kiln for a bisque firing. After this first firing, the clay body I use turns into a strong, vitrified white color from a fragile, porous, gray color. Once a piece is successfully bisque fired, the glazing process begins in my studio.
Each original, one-of-a-kind Ceramic Heart Wall Sculpture is also hand-painted by me, with low fire colorful glazes. Crystal glazes and under-glazes are also used to add to the depth and uniqueness of a piece. Most of my ceramic pieces go thru at least two firings which can reach temps of 2000 degrees. Sometimes I risk a third or a fourth firing.
