About Marsha Barron
I’m a painter currently living in Tucson, Arizona. I primarily work in watercolor, but I have used many mediums in my past work from oils to ceramics and photography. My current work is an exploration of the local flora and fauna found in the Sonoran Desert seen through the fresh lens of a "newcomer" to the area. My work is an invitation to seek out the often-forgotten magic that is all around us, that comes to us in subtle ways and is found everywhere, even in the least likely of places. It encompasses mystical elements and is subtly inspired by tarot or oracle cards, green witch vibes and desert life.
I earned my BFA Degree from Otis College of Art + Design in Los Angeles, CA in 2010. Right after college, I took a break from the professional art world, painting only occasionally while juggling multiple jobs in the food service industry and even embraced cubicle life. In 2019, I returned to painting after being commissioned by a friend to complete two paintings. It reignited my love of painting, and I decided to pursue my art career again and start from scratch. In 2020, my family and I moved to Tucson from California, and I set up an in-home studio where I work out of today.

About the Process
I currently work primarily in watercolor. After sketching in the basic composition, I will lay down a couple washes of color wet on wet and sometimes add salt for a textural organic effect. I will paint the main image(s) and add in the detail as the last step: shimmer, highlights and gold leaf.
I try to figure out the composition in the beginning stages, but allow room to change things if needed as the work develops. With this piece, I intend to let the graphite show through as well as the woodgrain. The paint will be thin transparent layers to allow the wood to be a main component which ties my early work to my current work.
