Shirley Wagner

I use the human form to tell a human story.
About Shirley Wagner

Shirley Wagner BFA, graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Youngstown University in Ohio. Her favorite class at the university was sculpture where she developed a love of form and structure. For over three decades she has been fabricating wall assemblage sculptures in her Tucson studio. Within the last two years she literally stepped her work away from the wall. Expanding her practice, she began a series of self standing large scale figurative sculptures. Realizing the ability of her work to communicate to a larger audience, she entered the field of public art.

The dynamism of form
Zenith

Zenith is one of three nine foot sculptures awarded  to me by the Flux 10 Scottsdale Commission for the Arts Grant in July 2022.  It is fabricated by Jason Butler of Special Interest Metalwerks from mild steel and powder coated with a green gloss finish. The site of the installation  was a strip mall with cantilevered roof lines.  It featured retail focusing on exercise studios and weight lifting facilities.   I wanted to complement the existing architecture and its tenants  with three distinct figures that each expressed three different moods.   Enhancing the mood of the center,  Zenith  stacks itself upright into the air with a powerful vertical thrust.

The push and pull of forms in space.
Surge

Surge  is one of three nine foot sculptures awarded to me by the  Flux 10 Scottsdale Commission for the Arts Grant in July 2022.  It is fabricated by Jason Butler of Special Interest Metalwerks from mild steel and powder coated with a bright orange gloss finish. Surge is the center figure in the 50′ long installation.  It occupies both vertical and horizontal space while twisting its torso into the air. Leaping in space, the bright orange color compliments the joyful gesture.

Creating a sense of calm.
Bliss
Bliss is one of three nine foot sculptures awarded to me by the  Flux 10 Scottsdale Commission for the Arts Grant in July 2022.  It is fabricated by Jason Butler of Special Interest Metalwerks from mild steel and powder coated with a periwinkle blue gloss finish. Each of the three figures conveys a unique sense of place and tells a human story. Balanced on one foot and arching upward, Bliss brings to this threesome a more open, meditative sense of calm which is enhanced by the mood of the color blue.
