Downtown’s Largest Sculpture to be Restored

In a new article by Kathleen Eriksen, President and CEO of Downtown Tucson Partnership, we get access to the most recent happenings around town, including one of the Arts Foundation’s Public Art Maintenance Projects, the Sonora sculpture.

Thanks to the City of Tucson, Department of Transportation and Mobility’s Public Art Maintenance Fund, Downtown’s largest and most prominent sculpture is being restored. ‘Sonora‘ is a sculpture created by artist David Black in 1991. The sculpture sits adjacent to the Joel D. Valdez Main Library entrance in Jácome Plaza (101 N. Stone Avenue). The restoration project, which includes a fresh coat of red paint, is scheduled to be completed this spring.

We also want to give a shoutout to our Public Art Team and Gabriela Barillas- Longoria from the City of Tucson for her invaluable contribution in making the restoration of downtown’s largest and most prominent sculpture ‘Sonora’ a reality. Their hard work and dedication have brought this iconic piece of public art back to its full glory for all to enjoy. Go Team!
