About the Art

About the Process

In my work I attempt to convey the anatomy of human emotions and sensations through form, structure, and the glow of saturated color. The human experience of being simultaneously tenacious and vulnerable is referred to through material combinations as well as the creation of illusory space. Tension is built, both physically and metaphorically, as elements opposed in character meet to form the surfaces and contour of the work. By combining translucent and reflective materials, I solidify and objectify ephemeral qualities of light, making tangible what cannot be otherwise described. I'm driven by the alchemy of art; how things can fuse to exceed the sum of their parts. My approach to structure reflects the progression and transformation seen in natural growth systems such as the chambered nautilus which leaves and ordered record of it's development, organic yet schematic in design. My current work is about the active nature of hope; how hope is a muscle that can be exercised, built, and used as power to lift. Hope is not passive. Hope is the precursor to action; the seed of vision. This work is the result of that experimentation, inspired and horrified by current environmental conditions; particularly the bleaching of coral reefs, a metaphor for so many threatened and "fading" natural species. I hope these acts of hope will remind us of what's possible, as grass does when it insists it's way through cement. My process is one of "additive" sculpture; I currently colonize box forms with structures designed to reflect, contain, and fuse light and color - all housed behind a "scrim" of plexiglass. This process is my own and has evolved over decades, since studying textile design at RISD, and fiber forms later at Cranbrook Academy of Art. My inspiration comes from architecture, plant forms, and patterns in general.
