About the Artist
Mary Jean Galivan – Artist BiographyMary Jean Galivan is a contemporary artist whose work explores the expressive potential of color through an intuitive, process-driven approach. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she developed an early fascination with materials and the ways they could be transformed into visual language. She pursued her formal studies in art at Southern Illinois University, Pima Community College, and the University of Arizona, where she deepened her practice across multiple mediums.
Gallivan's work spans printmaking, encaustic, acrylic, epoxy resin, and clay, often layering materials to create rich, tactile surfaces. Her bold use of color serves as both subject and emotion, guiding the viewer into an immediate and visceral experience. Each piece emerges organically, informed by gesture, experimentation, and a strong trust in process.
Her artwork has been exhibited in Chicago, New York, and Tucson, Arizona, reflecting both her Midwestern roots and her deep connection to the Southwest. Through her multi-medium practice, Gallivan continues to investigate the fluid balance between structure and spontaneity, inviting viewers into a world where color, texture, and form converge.
