About the Artist

I love to draw and began oil painting as a kid, and I delight in mixed media. I love to invent, and to bring unique substances into whatever I make: plant materials, glass, minerals and gems, charcoal from Mt. Lemmon. I've lived in many places but always return to my native Southwest, with its tremendous elemental presences. To make joyful effigies of the animals and birds we know so well in Tucson, inspired by the kachinas that have fascinated me from childhood, I glue together whatever comes to hand. I also love the challenge of capturing likeness, and have been creating an ongoing series of small portraits of inspiring women using gouache and pen. I make collaged paintings and large papier-mâché sculptures of mythic figures using an amazingly strong compound of laminated cardboard, paper and flour. Whether I'm doing something deeply mythic or simply goofy, it's always an expression of my love for everything I see, and I never see anyone or anything as deeply as when I draw or paint or sculpt it. I am an art historian and I have a PhD in mythological studies; it all adds up to this: art is core to the human psyche.

About The Event

Studio Kairios is the living and work place for two artists, Cheryl De Ciantis and Kenton Hyatt. You will be welcomed into our home, which is walking distance from Bear Canyon Trail. We use every square inch of the 1400 square feet of our home plus the outdoors for creative work, and for display of our works together with our collections of art and objects we love, natural curiosities and oddities, and the library of books that inspire us every day. You will be able to see our work spaces, and we will display finished works including oil paintings, drawings, mixed-media sculpture and works on paper, and works in progress. Original works and prints are available for purchase. If you wish, you can try out some of the myriad art materials we can make available. We have a labyrinth and invite you to walk it. Your kids are welcome too. Our house is not formally set up for wheelchair accessibility; our driveway is gravel. However, part of our display will be in our concrete-floored carport and roofed patio. We will be very happy to show works to those who wish to see them from a secure position.

Make a ‘Touchstone:’ Mixed-media demonstration/experience with materials provided for visitor participation – on request.
Artist Q&A: 10:00am – 4:30pm
