Day 2: Dana Ann Smith

Dana Ann Smith
she/her
Creative Medium: Ceramics, Drawing, Glass, Metal, Mixed Media 2D & 3D, Painting, Sculpture

About the Artist

Dana Smith finds inspiration for her sculptures and paintings from her years of residing in the rugged Tucson Mountains. Coming from a scientific background in medicine, many of her pieces reflect her knowledge of contagions, microbiology, and evolution.
Dana has displayed many of her sculptures at the Tucson International airport and her pieces have been juried into many competitive exhibitions throughout southwestern United States. She recently had a solo exhibition of her oversized ceramic and aluminum arthropods and her drawings of pond microbes at Tohono Chul entry gallery. She continues to share her expertise in figurative sculpture with both adults, college and high school students through lectures and workshops.
Dana's current work draws inspiration from plants and organisms 'that have survived, adapted and diversified since the Cambrian explosion, 500 million years ago!' Many of her large oil paintings imagine humans placed in surprising situations within the exotic Sonoran landscape. A young child can embrace the beautiful flowering barrel cacti, and sisters are capable of merging into a landscape of saguaros. In May 2024 Dana was awarded her MFA at the University of Arizona. She is constantly pursuing challenges in contemporary art and addressing community concerns.
