New Works 2016-2017 Awardees Artist Talk

Please join us as in an evening of short presentations by our New Works Artist Project Grant awardees for 2016-2017. The New Works Artist Project Grant seeks to support the depth and breadth of innovative new art work created and produced in the City of Tucson. It supports individual artists’ projects that meet the highest standards of excellence across a diverse spectrum of artistic disciplines. Creation activities must include the development and production of new art work and take an original and imaginative approach to content and form.

Awardees for FY 2016-2017 Include:

Wes Creigh

Project Description: “Of Rocks and Bullets: An Animated Discourse” is an animated short film that contemplates the occurrence of fatal shootings committed by Border Patrol officers along the US/Mexico border; specifically, the lethal shooting of 16 year-old Jose Antonio Elena in Nogales, Sonora.

Bill Mackey

Project Description: “OLD NOGALES HIGHWAY” is a book and accompanying bus ride experience about a road in Tucson; a road that traverses through the defining features of Tucson: Mexican, Military, Anglo, Native American, Desert, Agriculture, Retirees, New Development, Old Development, Hotels, Motels, Shops, Big Boxes, Taquerias, Houses, Rodeos, and Ranches.

Nika Keiser

Project Description: “Threshold” is a multi-channel video installation set at the meeting of the desert and the sea in coastal Sonora, where a narrative of transformation between human and dolphin realities takes place.

Alexandra Jimenez

Project Description: “The Talking Mural” is an interactive, site-specific mural that will depict stories from life on South 12th Avenue and utilize QR (Quick Response) scan codes to allow the participant to hear audio clips from collected oral stories.
