The Northwest Neighborhood Garden Fence Mural Dedication and Unveiling

Date: January 27, 2018
Time: 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Location: Mansfield Community Garden

The unveiling of the first Arts Foundation Public Art project of 2018 –  local artist Troy Neiman has steadily worked on this project for the Northwest Neighborhood Association in the Mansfield Community Garden, and now we can all celebrate the dedication and unveiling of this incredible piece of public art!

Applications for the
NEW WORKS grant are open!

The New Works Artist Project Grant seeks to support the depth and breadth of new artwork created and produced in the City of Tucson. It supports individual artists’ projects that meet the highest standards of excellence across a diverse spectrum of artistic disciplines.

Arts Congress is one day each year when you can make your voice heard at the State Capitol

Arts and culture advocates, patrons, educators business people and arts leaders gather on one day each year at the State Capitol while the Arizona State Legislature is meeting to speak directly to their state legislators about the importance of support for arts and culture in our state.

Bead Conference – Sonoran Glass School in partnership with Ornament Magazine
Date of Event: January 31, 2018 (Reception at 6:30pm, program begins at 7pm)
Location: 633 W 18th St
Event Cost: $5
Presentations will focus on glass beads from antiquity to contemporary practice. Presenters include Linda Sweeney, Floor Kaspers, Robert Liu, Paul Engle, and Tom Holland. For more information, call 520-884-7814.

17th Annual Flame Off Torchworking competition- Sonoran Glass School (SGS)
Date of Event: February 2, 2018 (7-11pm)
Event Cost: $20 general admission, $50 VIP
Glass artists from around the world will compete against the clock to create works inspired by this year’s theme “Assemblage: More than the Sum of its Parts.” Competitors donate their finished pieces to Sonoran Glass School to be bid on by attendees and the general public. Proceeds support the nonprofit Sonoran Glass School and its educational programming. Features lively music, food trucks, Thunder Canyon Brewery beer, wine, raffle prizes, and more. NEW Artifact at Hacienda Del Sol
Date of Event: February 10, 2018 (5-8pm)
Location: Hacienda Del Sol (5501 N Hacienda Del Sol Road, Tucson, AZ 85718)
Event Cost: $125 per reservation (Sales end January 30th – $70 of ticket is tax-deductible)
To support commitment to artistic collaboration within the Tucson community. An evening of delicious cuisine accompanied by poignant performances by Artifact company artists. All proceeds benefit Artifact Dance Project, a non-profit organization. For more information, click here.

NEW Tucson Gem, Mineral, & Fossil Showcase
Date of Event: January 27 – February 11, 2018

Glass Art Show – Sonoran Glass School
Date of Event: January 31 – February 3, 2018
Hosted in conjunction with the 2018 Tucson Gem & Mineral Show. The show is open to self-representing glass artists (jewelers, bead makers) and space is limited to 40 vendors. The show will overlap with the 17th Annual Flame Off and a Bead Conference held in partnership with Ornament Magazine. $825 for an 8′ table; $1075 for a 10′ x 10′ booth. For more information,

NEW Ten-Minute Play Contest – Casa Grande Arts & Humanities Commission
Deadline: February 14, 2018
This competition is open to full and part-time Arizona residents. Only original, never before produced plays are eligible. Each play may have no more than three characters and only one setting with minimal props and costumes. The play, exclusive of title and cast pages, may be no more than ten pages. Arizona Biennial 2018 at the Tucson Museum of Art
Deadline: March 2, 2018 (5pm)
All Arizona artists over 18 years of age working in any media are welcome to submit their work to be considered. The oldest running state-wide juried exhibition exclusively featuring Arizona artists, Arizona Biennial 2018 will be on view July 7-October 6, 2018. The work juried into the exhibition will be selected by guest curator Rebecca R. Hart, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Denver Art Museum, entirely from digital images or from video submissions.

Pima County’s Agua Caliente Park Ranch House Art Gallery
Deadline: March 9, 2018
Accepting applications from artists for consideration to display their work during a four-week exhibition period in 2019. Original artwork must reflect nature, wildlife, landscapes, southwestern themes, or local cultures that are in keeping with the park setting. Please submit cover sheet, 6-10 photographs (4″ x 6″ to 8″ x 10″) with labels, a brief resume or biography,  and an artist’s statement and description of work. NEW “An Inner Astronomy” – Installation and Sculptural Assemblage by Catherine Nash

Artist Catherine Nash has created a vintage inspired, imaginary artist/astronomer’s lab replete with mixed media painted celestial maps, encaustic monoprints and sculptural assemblage works.

NEW Citizens’ Institute on Rural Design (CIRD)
Deadline: February 16, 2018
A leadership initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts has issued a request for proposals inviting communities to apply for design assistance. The CIRD program provides rural communities with populations of 50,000 or less the opportunity to address challenges related to economic vitality and quality of life by employing design solutions. Organizations interested in applying for the CIRD 2018 workshop program will find the request for proposals posted on the CIRD website with the accompanying application guidelines. Arts and Crafts Instructors – Upcycle Tucson

News & Opps does not announce exhibit openings, fee-based news, programming, workshops or performances, fundraising events, or commercial art venues.
