The steel sculpture of artists Joe Ventura and Sandra Whitman is based on an original design of the school's mascot, the cougar, by students of the school from 1975. As the original sculpture designed and made by the students was constructed from paper mache, Whitman and Venture worked in tandem with the student body of 1977 to create a more permanent solution.
