Dirt Tornado

The public art on Tanque Verde seeks to hold up and celebrate the very reason there is a community along the road: the water, which has been historically found in the area and used for livestock. The concept for the sculpture was to cast an impression of the actual topography of the wash, (which has more than one name including the Tanque Verde and the Bonanza Wash), prior to its reconstruction.

Thomas Sayre, Dirt Tornado, 2010.

Focused on the idea of water and it's impact on the environment, artist Thomas Sayre created 5 earth casting of the nearby wash, erected into a cone-like shape. The castings capture the form and texture of the banks, carved by rushing water, as well as the alluvial deposits at the bottom of the wash.
