Luis Gutierrez Bridge

The rich verdant land of the Santa Cruz River drew people to settle and farm millennia ago. The integration of artistic themes give due reverence to this once perennial river which sustained and nourished countless generations before the rapid population growth of the late 19th century. The artistic goal emphasizes the significance of the bridge as a span across time that reaches to our past: a span that connects times, cultures and technologies.

Like ghosts from the past, cottonwood leaves incorporated along the steel cut bridge serve as a unifying element and tribute to their once great abundance. The plentiful fish and fowl of a time now gone are also recognized on the bridge piers. Artists David Johnson Vandenberg, Gregory Schoon, Jesse Augustine, Brenda Semanick, and Dave Dobler incorporated motifs of the past using modern art techniques.
