Pavo Cristatus

Pavo Cristatus is the Latin name for peafowl. The birds have full range within Reid Park Zoo, coming and going where they please and surprising visitors when they fan their feathers. When designing the entryway feature "Pavo Cristatus" for Reid Park Zoo, the predominant goal was to create a work that would delight children. We wanted children to have fun with the piece and be able to sit and play on it. We also wanted to create a work that would create a photo opportunity for adults and children alike so all would remember their visit to the Reid Park Zoo.

A depiction of a peafowl acts as a low bench at the entry way of the zoo. Artists Stephen Grede and Nina Borgia-Aberle constructed the bench from concrete with a bronze head. The peafowls intricate feathers are depicted using colorful tile work.
