Quetzalcoatl

Through interactive workshops with members of the 5 neighborhoods and students from the area schools that make up this community, we conceptualized a theme relevant to the history, cultural make-up, and diversity of this area. The Gateway Park was then designed in collaboration with the Tetra Tech Infrastructure Group. Together we produced designs and drawings/schematics for the art components for inclusion in the construction documents and the contractor fabricated the artwork. During the construction phase, we worked with the contractor on placement of lamp pole sculptures and installment of tiles on the park benches. The rocks on the radial walls were designed to visually integrate the rocks in the sculptural base. Radiating from the sculptural base on the hard cape is the squash blossom design referencing the Tohono Oodham. Tiles produced by students were integrated into the sidewalk patterns and benches.

Juan and Patricia Navarrete, Quetzalcoatl, 2007.

Artists Juan and Patricia Navarrete, in collaboration with the community, chose to reference the story of Quetzalcoatl in their artwork. Composed of carbon steel, the sculpture depicts two abstracted forms, intertwined with one another almost as if in battle.
