Tohono O’odham Hua Puindi (Tohono O’odham, Basket Bridge)
The design for this bridge was inspired by the intricate basketry of the Tohono O'odham Nation, a people whose prehistoric ancestors inhabited the Tucson area. Archeological evidence documents basketry as North America's most ancient art form with the oldest O'odham work dating back to 800 A.D. The artist incorporated 3 stylized symbols into the design of the bridge - coyote tracks, geometric lizard images, and a whirlwind pattern etched into the decking of the bridge.
