About the Artist

Jeanine Colini is a Tucson-based artist and designer. Her award-winning work has been exhibited internationally. Jeanine's "A to Zoo" animal alphabet, created in 1981 while at Pratt, celebrates its 43rd birthday this year! The critters have appeared in the movie "Three Men And A Baby," television series "Dynasty" and are in the private collection of actor Jimmy Stewart. Other type-inspired works include "Art of the State" USA map and "A to Z Cactus," a unique alphabet, featuring cactus of the Sonoran Desert. Upon moving to Tucson in 2018 Jeanine was inspired by the distinctive beauty of the Sonoran Desert flora and fauna, expanding her Naturescapes watercolor collection. She regularly exhibits at the Pima County library and teaches her drawing workshops there, at Tohono Chul and in senior centers. Jeanine sells her art locally and nationally on her web site, and creates custom artwork by commission. Jeanine Colini Design Art (JCDA) was initially established in Los Angeles in 1985, specializing in publication design for corporate clients. Jeanine taught graphic design and typography at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and Woodbury University in Burbank, both in California. She earned her BFA from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY in 1981.

About the Art

About the Process

I create whimsical art to brighten your day! My fascination with letters began when I was five years old. It continued through high school and art school and is still very active. Much of my art is influenced by design media. My degree from Pratt Institute is in communications design and I have been designing print publications for over 40 years. My strong foundation in both drawing and design combine in the creation of my alphabet art. I created my "A to Zoo" animal alphabet while in art school. I completed it in 1981 so it's been in existence for 43 years. "A to Zoo" provided the inspiration for my "A to Z Cactus" alphabet, "Art of the State" USA map and "What's Your Sign?" astrology art. More alphabets are in the works! Watercolor is my primary medium. I love vibrant colors and the loose quality that watercolor allows. I paint primarily on Fabriano watercolor paper–a vegan/plant-based sheet–using brushes with synthetic bristols. I also create in pastels when a subject calls for a softer look. These days, I'm inspired by Sonoran Desert landscapes and the flora and fauna that surround me. I also love to paint flowers, birds and tropical fish because they are so colorful. All my art is created by hand. I use digital media for scanning and preparing my artwork to make print reproductions and apply to fine art merchandise. I do not use AI in any aspect of my art creation.
