About the Artist

Having lived on the Long Island Sound, waterscapes are my native vision transformed to oil-on-canvas. In recent months I found a Tucson water oasis to add to my life-long series, Water Close-up, which was featured in Desert Leaf, Nov 2020. A recent painting, Agua Caliente, was chosen for the up-coming 2024 Arizona Biennial where it will hang in the Tucson Museum of Art, October through February. Having moved from New England to Tucson AZ eight years ago and accustomed to working on location, I found the desert vast and without boundaries. To create intimacy with my new surroundings, I chose cacti I found beautiful, planted them in pots, painted their portraits and launched my series, Desert Contained—later featured in the Arts Foundation Tucson Open Studio 2020. I was raised in the New York City area and received a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA from Boston University.

About the Art

About the Process

Judith Austen, an artist renowned for her evocative water paintings, brings a unique vision to the canvas. Her latest work, Agua Caliente, has been selected for the 2024 Arizona Biennial at the Tucson Museum of Art—a prestigious honor recognizing the region's most compelling contemporary artists. In Agua Caliente, Austen captures the delicate interplay of light, shadow, and reflection on the surface of a desert oasis. Having grown up near the Long Island Sound, Austen has always been captivated by water's transformative qualities. "Water is ever-changing and impossible to pin down," she says. "I paint it to capture a moment that is already slipping away." A graduate of Pratt Institute and Boston University, Austen brings her lifelong fascination with water to the deserts of Tucson, uncovering its beauty in unexpected places. Her paintings draw viewers into a contemplative space, where light and landscape come together in moments of quiet reflection.
