About the Artist
Art and science intertwine to illuminate a richer understanding of our existence. Since 2004, Kathryn Busby has explored the world through the dual lenses of science and art. Using a blend of magical realism and scientific illustration to portray macro-scenes of real species interacting, she infuses her mixed-media drawings and paintings with a sense of the sacred, surreal, and sometimes silly. Born in Austin, Texas, Kathryn attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she completed a BS in Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior, and a BA in Studio Art simultaneously. She later continued her science education through a doctorate at the University of Arizona focused on the ecology of native bee species in the rich, diverse, and intricately complex settings that define arid lands. She has since continued using art to enhance her science, and science to enhance her art. She aims to portray the fantastic nature of the ecosystems she has come to love, and capture the beauty and value of our natural world.
