About the Artist

I grew up outside of Chicago in a large, artistic family and while in high school my father enrolled me in classes at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. I continued as an undergraduate and would visit the museum regularly, studying renowned painters such as Georgia O'Keefe and Vincent Van Gogh, and discovering the innovative creations of Issey Miyake and many others. The city skyline, Lake Michigan and the edgy music scene were inspiring, but I wanted to explore the U.S., and in 1996 moved to Austin TX, and then to the Pacific Northwest. In 1999, I came to Tucson, and after studying fashion design at Pima Community College, spent 20 years costuming for professional theater companies. Working summers in Wisconsin and California was invigorating, as well as 2 years spent in fabulous New York City. My body of work includes dynamic abstractions as well as figurative expressions. Inspired by my travels, architecture, music, and dance, much of my work has linear or gridded strokes combined with softer, flowing elements. In addition to painting and various 3-dimensional pieces, I am also designing fashions inspired by fabric printed with my artwork.

About the Art

About the Process

My artistic process often begins with a visualization of shape and color, which I translate into a rough sketch or gesture using graphite or charcoal. If texture is integral to the composition, I layer modeling paste onto the surface next, with palette knives and various tools to create a dynamic surface. My color palette, often vibrant and expansive, evolves intuitively, driven by the concepts I wish to explore. What starts out subconsciously frequently turns into deliberate use of colors to evoke certain emotions or ideals. Guided by the chakra chart, I may use red to depict physical strength and passion, blue and green for healing and love. Other work is inspired by the physical world around us and textile manipulation. Standard materials I use include water soluble oil paint, graphite, watercolor pencils, modeling paste, recycled textiles, leather, raw canvas, fabric and acrylic paint
