About the Artist

María Belén Mejía Pape is a Language and Art teacher, Interpreter, translator, activist, and mother. She is an entrepreneur and owner of Aprender y Jugar Language Program LLC. Her passion and love for preserving her native language, traditions, and culture, allow her to enjoy herself while teaching, and reading bilingual books to adults. María Belén was born in Quito, Ecuador, she has a degree in Journalism and is fluent in 3 languages. In 2022, she wrote a proposal to celebrate the Hispanic heritage of the local Tucson community and was awarded with a scholarship to carry out the proposal. This year, she presented a second proposal to demystify the negative connotation around menopause, encourages dialogue on this topic, and celebrates this transition by honoring and empowering women" cycles. M. Belen is an art teacher. Her art process is real and honest, she uses vibrant colors, and her style is quite surreal. She uses mixed media and expresses themes related to personal experiences. She has participated in several exhibitions, such: "Birds from Southern Arizona" (paper bird sculptures, curated with natural elements such as branches or trunks from the Sonoran Desert and fairy lights). In 2023, her art was displayed Eckstrom-Columbus Library.
