About the Process
Artist Statement
My name is Monique Mynlieff. I am a painter and my favorites tools are oil paints with vibrant glazes, drawing tools that make passionate clear marks, paper and wood. I have called Tucson home for 29 years and find the vibrant southwest mix of cultures to be inspirational as well as the natural enviornment that is unique to the southwest.
My inspiration comes from family folklore, cultural mythology, the animal world,
and figurative work. My paintings and drawings are conversations between materials and the subconscious.
My work is in oil, acrylic, oil stick, wood panels, canvas and paper.
I look for connections and allow myself to choose any images that help convey the story I want to explore in each painting.
I hope to create tension by combining lyrical and disturbing imagery. This juxtaposition tries to compel the viewer to inquire into my narrative more deeply. My desire is to conjure up existential themes of struggle, loss, and connection.
My current work is exploring characters of protection, myth and play. I am working on wood panels so that I can layer the glazes and scratch through the surface to help emphasize the layers of connection between the images. Working with images of fish, swallows, diablos, protection amulets and good luck charms.
