About the Art

About the Process

From the age of 3, Onda's dance journey began with the Kuumba Dance Collective in New Orleans, LA, where she was immersed in West African dance until she was 10. This early experience laid the foundation for her lifelong passion for dance. At 11, she expanded her dance experience with her Afro-Honduran roots, joining Estrella Garifuna, where she continued to explore and celebrate her ancestry through dance until she was 19. In 1997, at the age of 19, Onda expanded her repertoire by studying Afro-Brazilian art forms with Capoeira Malandragem, Tucson's first capoeira academy co-founded with her husband at that time, Dondi Marble. She also joined the Barbea Williams Dance Company in Tucson, AZ, deepening her knowledge and skills in West African dance over two years. This period was a significant time of growth and development in her dance career. A pivotal moment came in 1999, at age 21, when Onda first visited Brazil and was captivated by the allure of Samba. She studied traditional Samba de Roda with Dona Nalvinha, daughter of the esteemed Mestre Bimba, marking a new chapter in her dance journey. Since then she has visited Salvador, Bahia, BR on five more nearly month long occasions dedicating hours of focus to Afro-Brazilian cultural studies directly from the source. From 1997 to the present, Onda has continued to refine her craft, studying Afro-Brazilian dance with renowned instructors such as Dandha Da Hora, Roseangela Silvestre, Aninha Malandro, Amen Santos, and Conceicao Damasceno. Her dedication and skill have led to performances with Viva Brazil of Colorado at each showcase between 2015 and 2021, showcasing her versatility and deep commitment to the art of dance. She uses her talent of interpretation help others learn to dance by breaking down complex techniques into familiar daily movements.
