About the Artist

A love of beads started my journey to the place I am today. Experimenting with many different materials, color combinations and techniques is a daily form of exercise for me. My work has been sold at juried art shows, in boutiques, galleries, and online since 1995. As a retire educator, teaching wire and bead techniques has been a delightful enhancement to my artistic career. I have taught at all the national bead shows. Publications include my book, Wire Knitting...On a Spool, Making Bead & Wire Jewelry and Bead Unique Magazine. Some experience with metal and the infinite design qualities possible with wire pulled me further along my artistic path. I employ spool knitting with wire, a fiber technique created in 10th century Scandinavia for making cords and braids, to the creation of jewelry and accessories. Wrapping the wire in a variety of ways and adding beads and/or fiber allows me to create different looks, experimenting with colors, textures and wires. Using off-loom bead weaving techniques sparks my imagination. My journey continues, with combinations of fiber, wire and beads, Who knows where the journey will end.

About the Art

About the Process

My two main artistic processes are off-loom beadweaving and knitting or coiling wire by hand. I use wooden spools in different sizes to knit, using a stylus to manipulate the wire. I like using small glass beads and crystal beads and other shapes to create bead woven and bead embroidery pieces. This all began with a love of beads. I make a variety of jewelry styles, as well as some other items such as small treasure boxes. Interacting with other bead/wire artists across the globe provides stimulation for creative ideas, especially experimenting with colors, shapes and textures. My latest piece of bead embroidery began with a way to use some fine silver items that I created using metal clay. They provided the basis for the design. First the items were given a beaded bezel to secure them on a firm foundation. Then the shape of the piece was dictated by the space between and at each end of the beadwork. The colors of the beads used were chosen because the silver pieces were made to mimic a type of shell, thus ocean colors. In the end, a bracelet was the result.
