About the Artist

Suzanne Sahakian is a fine art photographer who started out to be a ballet dancer, earned a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan, an M.A. from Bryn Mawr College. She went on to become a lawyer, practicing commercial litigation for 26 years in Detroit and Chicago, taking early retirement at the end of 2010 to focus on her creative passions. She has had a studio at the Steinfeld Warehouse since 2018 and is currently the Director of Steinfeld Gallery and SIDETRACK. She has working studios in Tucson and Santa Fe, where she prints, mats and frames her own work. For Suzanne, photography is a way of capturing and presenting life around her as she sees it, defining an energy, highlighting details that might otherwise go unnoticed. She has a passion for color. Her photos and photo collages are colorful and vibrant reflections of urban scenes, natural landscapes and botanic blooms. She likes to think her photos are optimistic and compelling, providing a calm against the backdrop of daily routine - 'a visual vacation' as one viewer described it, and a reminder of the inherent and poignant possibilities of everyday life. Many of her photos are mistaken for paintings.

About this Tour

Steinfeld Gallery & Studios is located in the historic Steinfeld Warehouse in Tucson’s Warehouse Arts District. It has 2 gallery spaces, Steinfeld Gallery & SIDETRACK and a number of artist studios. For the Open Studio Tour, 5 local women artists will be showing their work in Steinfeld Gallery in an exhibition entitled ‘The Unexpected’ and another local artist will be displaying her artwork in our smaller gallery SIDETRACK. Many of the Steinfeld artists who have studios in Steinfeld Warehouse will have their studios open for you to browse, converse with the artists and perhaps find something to take home with you! My studio, E-2, will be open.

About the Process

For me, photography is a way of capturing and presenting life around me as I see it, defining an energy, highlighting details that might otherwise go unnoticed. My photos and photo collages are colorful and vibrant reflections of urban scenes, natural landscapes and botanic blooms. I likes to think my photos are optimistic and compelling, providing a calm against the backdrop of daily routine - 'a visual vacation' as one viewer described it, and a reminder of the inherent and poignant possibilities of everyday life. I print my own work on various printers, including a new Canon iPF Pro-2600, using Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta Satin paper, 300 gsm, and I mat and frame my photos, many of which are mistaken for paintings. My photos hang in private collections throughout the country and businesses in Chicago and Tucson.
