About the Artist
Tom Patton, a photographic artist, was born in Sacramento, California, to architect parents who studied with Pop artist Wayne Thiebaud. He earned his BFA (1976), MA (1977), and MFA (1982) in photography, studying at the San Francisco Art Institute and the University of New Mexico. Over a 44-year teaching career, most notably at the University of Missouri–St. Louis and California State University, Chico, he shaped generations of photographers.
Pursuing his art for more than five decades, Patton's work has appeared in 300+ exhibitions, 60 publications, and museum collections worldwide. Honors include a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship and the James D. Phelan Foundation Award. Tom will have a book of his work published by Daylight Books in 2026. He learned from photographic greats, including Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Beaumont Newhall, and Henry Wessel Jr. He once sold artwork to both Robert Rauschenberg and Nicole Kidman.
An adventurer at heart, Patton has hiked the Grand Canyon, survived quicksand, encountered bears and sharks, and witnessed two UFOs. Now 71, he lives in Tucson, Arizona, with his wife, artist Nancy Scott Patton. He continues to create art and music, sustaining a lifelong dedication to creativity and expression.
