About the Artist
My homeland for the past forty years has been the desert, mountains and canyons of Arizona. I built my own home, studio and darkroom in the 90s, by hand, of stone and adobe in Tucson's downtown barrio. It was a labor of love working with local materials, a means of putting down roots. In my art I have worked with many of the same materials: mesquite, cactus pads, saguaro ribs, stone. My first show was in 1979, at the newly opened Center for Creative Photography, my most recent was a one-person, whole gallery show at Tohono Chul in 2024. My work is in public, corporate, museum and private collections across this country. I have received multiple grants and awards, book covers, magazine stories, even a book published in Japan of my work. All that can be found in my resume. What matters to me is the work I will do tomorrow, next month, next year. I feel our culture has forgotten how to talk to trees, how to sing to stones. When out working, I listen for their forgotten songs. I believe art is a conduit, a path to reclaim what it means to be at home on this earth.
