About the Artist

Xinyu Zhang took an unconventional path to becoming an artist. After obtaining a Bachelor of Law degree from Peking University, she worked as an editor for a notable press in Beijing, where she was drawn to the art of book design. Self-taught in the field, she soon became a popular book designer. In 2002, she was accepted into the MFA program at the University of Arizona, where she was granted the opportunity to fully immerse herself in the world of fine art and explore a diverse range of fields.

Xinyu Zhang's work has been featured in many exhibitions, including a solo show at the University of Arizona Museum of Art in 2019. The exhibition featured a diverse range of media, including installation, mixed media paintings, and CGI video. It was featured on the television program Arizona Illustrated by Arizona Public Media.

Zhang was an artist-in-residence at Centrum in 2025, a finalist in the Taiwan International Artist Grand Prize Competition in 2019, the Arizona Biennial in 2018, and the Chelsea International Fine Art Competition in 2015.

About The Event

This open studio serves as a preview and critique session for my upcoming solo exhibition 'Scattered Memories.' By manipulating rice paper into sculptural forms and integrating them into canvas-based works, I aim to expand the boundaries of what painting can be. This body of work is also a meditation on fragility and resilience—qualities I associate not only with rice paper, but also with identity, memory, and the passage of time. The process is slow and contemplative: each form is carefully constructed and deliberately placed on the canvas.

I warmly welcome your feedback and suggestions. Light refreshments and tea will be provided.
