About the Process

Betina Fink has traveled around the southwest and elsewhere, taking visual notes in the form of pastel drawings, oil sketches and graphite drawings. Capturing the light as it changes while being inspired by the beautiful and mystical natural becomes the subject matter for larger pieces made in the studio.
Small plein air paintings done on site are usually 8 x 10", painted in oil in the span of about an hour and a half. It's important to gesture and block in basic shapes, direction of light, cloud formations and color harmonies. This group of plein air studies is from a painting trip to the Four Corners and are considered finished pieces.
Working in black, grey and white with marker and pen is often a quick way to quickly sketch in an impression of a landscape view. This sketch (of Sebago Lake, Maine) shows atmospheric perspective and a one point perspective viewpoint. This is a 20 minute sketch, 5 x 7" and set the tone for a larger, oil painting made in the studio (see on website).
