About Oliverio Balcells
Oliverio Balcells is a multimedia artist whose practice includes painting, music, murals, mosaic art, films, photography, being a teaching artist and a scholar of the ancient Mesoamerican cultures.
“I’m interested in social themes like history, culture and symbolism. I’m inspired by color, nature and music. The essence of my artwork expresses the energy and personal passion that is reflected in a song, a painting or a public art project.”
Oliverio has been selected in 2012, 2016, 2019, 2020 and 2021 by the City of Tempe for different Public Art Programs. Recently he was selected as public art artist to work for the City of Goodyear at the Historic Goodyear Parking Lot Screen Wall.
In 2020 Oliverio was selected as an artist for various public art programs in the Valley, including the City of Glendale, City of Goodyear and the City of Chandler. In 2017 he was a selected artist for Valley Metro’s public art for the Northwest extension of the light rail with a design made with mosaic / tile art on the risers’ stairs for one of the stations.
Oliverio Balcells received his Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from the Univa University in Guadalajara, Mexico.

About the Process
My creative process is mainly to be attentive to ideas, insights or momentary surprises where I always make notes about them. Later I review the ones that I like and are aligned with my life; at this moment it is a matter of deciding in which technique, in which musical tone or simply a poem.
As for public art commissions, I always do historical research on the place, interview the neighbors to hear their stories, and then start sketching. Then I take this sketch to the laptop to play for a while with colors and then decide which technique would be the right one to develop the project.
This is practically my creative process.
