About Suzanne Sahakian Photography

My photographs are colorful expressions of life as I see it, whether urban scenes, landscapes, macro blooms or photo collages. I work to create what I saw and felt when I took the shot, the energy conveyed, and the details discovered upon closer inspection. The results are vibrant statements of everyday places locally and abroad (Tucson, Santa Fe, Paris, Scotland, to name a few), natural backdrops, blooms and butterflies that we sometimes pass by without really seeing. I like to think my photos are optimistic and compelling, providing a calm against the backdrop of daily routine, a ‘visual vacation’ and a reminder of the inherent and poignant possibilities of everyday life. Many of my photos are mistaken for paintings.

I started out to be a ballet dancer and then practiced law for 26 years in Detroit and Chicago before taking early retirement to focus on creative passions, including photography. I now live in Tucson and have a studio for showing and selling my work in the Steinfeld Warehouse Community Arts Center, located in Tucson’s historic Warehouse Arts District. I have a working studio with a large format printer and smaller printers in my Catalina Foothills home.

About the Process

I develop my photos digitally through Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. I first bring a photo into Lightroom and selectively enhance colors and lighting; then through Photoshop I brighten dark areas like windows and bring out existing colors, sometimes adding color layers for streets and sidewalks and/or painting in Photoshop. 'Cafe Roka,' Bisbee, AZ
For landscapes, I may use a layer of color in the photo to highlight the scene, enhancing or deepening the existing colors to evoke the mood and natural simplicity of the photo. 'Purple Mountains & Rolling Hills,' Santa Fe, NM, 2021
