About Tracy Ann Holmes

Tracy received an Art Education K-12 Certificate and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Ceramics from Brigham Young University in 1998. With over 25 years of experience she utilizes ceramic in tile, mural and sculptural art. Tracy’s sculptural work is predominately the female form used in figurative metaphor. Her favorite mural technique is that of free form mosaics that utilize grout lines as design lines. In 2014 Tracy attended the workshop of architectural ceramics artists Peter King & Xinia Marin so she could expand her skill-set to create public artworks that will last for generations. Glazed tiles never fade, are more resistant to pollution than even stone, and are easily cleaned–creating a beautiful and permanent contribution to the community. Recent projects include tile murals at schools and clay carvings for home interiors.

Down In The River Jordan, tile mural 32"x36" with hidden grout lines
Down In The River Jordan

Built as one slab of clay with additive and subtractive relief. The slab is cut along design lines, fired in the kiln, glazed and fired again, then reassembled and mounted to a board. The grout lines are painted so that they disappear.

Coronado K-8 Tile Mural

Tracy created a cartoon of the design and transferred it to scale on thick plastic and each shape assigned a number. The students help roll out big sheets of clay and join them together into one large slab. The plastic sheet with the design was laid over the slab, traced and cut out. The students helped number the backs of the tiles so the pieces could be returned to the proper order. After the bisque firing the students glazed each of the individual tiles. Everything was fired again and then reassembled. The design was traced onto the cement board. The tiles were removed one more time and the cement board was attached to the block wall. The pieces were then mortared in place and then grouted. The mural is hung in the main courtyard of the school.
