Mountain Ave. Phase 3

The art components of Mountain Avenue Phase 3 express an aesthetic response to neighborhood input. The number and sizes of boulders mirror Phase 1 but with a more naturalistic organic placement. Through soliciting public input, it was suggested that poetry of neighborhood resident Ofelia Zepeda be sandblasted into the boulders. Neighbors also suggested the painting of the ubiquitous dark green electrical cabinets to mitigate their presence.

Simon Donovan, Ophelia Zepeda, Mountain Ave. Phase 3, 2010.

Working with the community, artists Simon Donovan and Ofelia Zepeda created a series of engraved granite sculptures depicting Zepeda's poetry. The poetry was sandblasted into the granite in Tohono O'odham with English translations. Electric boxes near the work were painted to disappear into the environment, drawing attention to the granite boulders.
