This project includes 48,000 square feet of sound and retaining walls in the north section of La Cholla Boulevard. The project features a sequence of pattern motifs derived from the Cholla Pencil Cactus. The patterns map by using 12' x 24' pattern layouts, recombined in various configurations to create a variety of pattern sequences onto wall heights varying from 4' to 12'. Relief is 2" maximum. The work is best described as a series of sequential pattern motifs that both celebrate and memorialize the Cholla, as there are no Cholla cacti on La Cholla Boulevard. In this sense, the Cholla cacti are "manufactured," created through a computer-aided design cutting process that machines the landscape element, not unlike the process of creating roads. Native plants provide counterpoint and softening to the hardscape, creating a compelling mix of naturalized gestures against the deliberate grid.
