Cairns

Cairns is meant to simply be a large-scale version of the stone markers seen along trails in many cultures. It is also to evoke associations with the nearby Texas Canyon's natural rock formations in the Chiricahua Mountains. The intent is to create a perilous looking balancing act that seemingly defies gravity.

Seen as an artwork defying gravity, artists Simon Donovan, Caryl Clement and Susan Gamble of Santa Theresa Tile Works worked in collaboration to create a series of enlarged cairns. Working with large, locally sourced granite boulders, the artists allude to mush smaller cairns often seen as trailhead markers throughout varying cultures. The artwork is simultaneously meant to reference the nearby Chiricahua Mountains.
