Santa Cruz

The idea came to me on the bank of the Santa Cruz, the river that flows through Tucson. I designed an abstract landscape to fit the space - an uninterrupted river with its changing vegetation and changing weather, creating "an actual, apprehensible Southwestern space that has weight but is constantly changing and renewing itself. It is a space impossible to predict other than to say that it will occur; a space that communicates directly through the eye of the nervous system."

Jim Waid, Santa Cruz, 1977.

Artist Jim Waid depicts an abstracted landscape on an elongated wall situated above the common area of the library. Waid drew inspiration for the mural from the Santa Cruz river and alludes to ideas of openness, which he believes is an important characteristic of every library.
