About the Artist

Born in New Jersey 1965, Galbreath graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1985 while designing in a local advertising agency. After receiving his BA in Visual Art, he earned his MDiv, continuing to design on a freelance basis. In 1997 Eric relocated to Tucson. The wide open sky and saturated colors captivated his spirit. Designing full time, Eric began painting abstract works, a way to detach from the flat, artificially perfect world inside the computer. Using his hands to manipulate real, physical materials was just the needed catalyst for an explosion of light and color. "I think the energy of life is a kind of random chaos. Each makes some semblance of meaning, imposing order, rearranging, moving, and combining ideas, events, memories. We repeat, correct, update, and edit our histories, overlaying the past. Living is a messy process. This is my basic approach: layer builds on layer, simplicity gives way to complexity. The the chaos, over time, forms a beauty, a logic, a composition arrived at, discovered, coaxed, rather than intended or forced. My challenge: connect with my work from a pre-cognitive, nonverbal place; hold closure at bay; appreciate being in the moment with the beauty of ambiguity."

About the Process

My Artistic Process: Exploring Creativity through Color and Texture As an abstract artist, I primarily work with acrylics. My favorite tools include brushes, of course, but really anything that can be used to apply paint, which allows me to build each piece layer upon layer. Texture and bright color are central to my process, and I often embed unconventional materials like paper or sand to create depth and texture on the canvas. Living in Tucson has been a major influence on my work. The landscapes and atmosphere of the southwestern US have inspired my use of earth tones, as well as the bold, dynamic saturated colors and shapes that I bring into each piece. I try to blend organic forms with vibrant hues to create visual contrast and energy. My body of work revolves around large, abstract paintings that invite viewers to explore the layers and details up close. Each painting is a journey, evolving over time as I experiment with color and form. I aim to evoke emotional responses, whether through the brightness of a color or the tactile nature of the surface. My non-objective abstract paintings are driven by emotion and evolve organically. I often work on multiple pieces simultaneously, allowing time and space for each painting to develop over months. There's always a degree of randomness in my process, whether through the layering of textures or the interaction of colors, and I embrace the unpredictability that emerges. When I begin a new piece, I never really know what it will look like in the end. I enjoy the process of discovery, allowing the painting to lead me as much as I lead it. Each layer reveals new possibilities, and I continuously experiment until the final composition feels complete and aligned with the emotions I want to convey.
