Lessons of a Disaster

This is one of the first pieces that the artist produced after a fire gutted his New York studio. It depicts the fire consuming the unfinished work in his studio, but also suggests a phoenix rising with new life from the flames of destruction. The work has been loaned to the University of Arizona Museum of Art by the Jacques and Yulla Lipchitz Foundation. The museum also owns 61 plaster sketches and models which Lipchitz produced during the course of his career.
