Sonora

I wanted Sonora to be a bright, active pavilion-sculpture, interpreting Southwest Native designs above a circle of arrow-like columns - a sculpture to serve Tucson as both a proud landmark, topped by its pyramidal "mountain" and as an intimate, relaxing viewing-enclosure.

Composed of brightly painted steel, artist David Black's 'Sonora' compliments the white marble facade of the neighboring library. The curbed arches and series of abstractions draw inspiration from the Tucson mountains, and create playful shadows along the library's courtyard.
