This piece was created as the result of an accident in the Optical Sciences laboratory. Workers were trying to split a glass disk to make a lens when the disk "exploded" into multiple fragments. Cowen, who was an artist/illustrator for the Optical Sciences Department, mounted several pieces in a steel frame to fabricate the sculpture.
