Reflections

Rillito River Park is a unique landmark in the city of Tucson because it is where the Pantano wash and Tanque Verde wash merge creating the Rillito River. In this proposal I would like to increase the awareness of this natural location. There is a significant advantage in utilizing the gateway as it is the visitor's first impression of the park. This piece would inform the public of the Rillito River's beginning. The sitr has a geographic advantage in that it provides a bird's eye view as you drive south on Craycroft or as you enter the park. The sculpture I'm proposing utilizes this aspect of the site. By combining the use of steel and stone, it is my intention to create a piece that is meaningful. The hand-forged iron elements will complement the formation of the rocks to describe the river. The three boulders set the tone for the rivers flow. Nine bars on each side of the Y represent the washes as they converge. Sixteen bars represent the river.

Using hand-forged steel bars, artist David Flynn calls attention to the merging which creates the Rillito River. The bars compose what appears to be an abstracted river, lined by 3 natural boulders.
