Randy Colosky

About Randy Colosky

The visual language of my work is formal, material and process based. I strive to set up a visual polarity of what is familiar and unfamiliar as a way to engage the viewer about time passing and the continuous state of change in nature both on a human and geologic timescale.

My intent is to create work that has layers of visual data that can unfold in the present as well as over time. I look for ways to transform universal concepts from nature, technology, history, and personal experience into a formal geometric language of shape, color, pattern and form. In the ways I need art in my life, I want to offer opportunities for people to momentarily step out of their routine, engage in the present moment and contemplate the physicality of the world.

Public Artist Art Roster

Public art works are a form of meditative disruption in the landscape, an opportunity to break people out of their routine and focus on something that is optical and contemplative. In my art practice, I have continued to explore material and how they interact with architecture, light and space. Many of my works have an inherent optical nature that plays with materials (steel, wood, paint, and ceramic) and its relationship to viewer engagement. My motivation for this is to show that sometimes materials we interact with everyday can be transformed into a kind of visual poetry. I like to think about how things are not always as they seem, thus needing examination over time and from different perspectives. I have created numerous works that use ambient light to create dynamic vantage points that respond to the viewer’s position in relation to the work.
