Santa Cruz

The idea came to me on the bank of the Santa Cruz, the river that flows through Tucson. I designed an abstract landscape to fit the space - an uninterrupted river with its changing vegetation and changing weather, creating "an actual, apprehensible Southwestern space that has weight but is constantly changing and renewing itself. It is a space impossible to predict other than to say that it will occur; a space that communicates directly through the eye of the nervous system."
Waid's problem, as he contemplated the exaggerated length and awkward proportions of the librarys wall, was to design something meaningful to fit it. The design and subject has meaning specific to the site. It should transport and enlarge the viewer's vision through the opening of perceptual doors. Opening doors is the precise purpose of a library. The mural works on several levels, for it can also open doors from the building into the immediate Southwestern landscape as well as to other associations.
