Taking Flight

In designing Taking Flight, for the Albert M. Gallego Skate Park Public Art Project, I chose the themes of history, youth, nature, movement, and beauty. I used sinuous shapes with elements such as swallows in flight and flowing vines, which symbolize the youthful skaters in flight, while accenting the artwork with classic design elements, which echo the nearby historic neighborhood and train.
The intention was to create an even, overall effect by dispersing the artwork evenly around the fence perimeter of the skate park to be enjoyed from all angles. A specific highlight is the entry marquee sign, which features the artistic elements and the name of the park. Because the Skate Park would be frequently used, I chose to use materials, which would be durable such as powder-coated steel for the fence enhancement and concrete benches in the visitors areas. I have enjoyed working with the community on this project and it was an honor to have been chosen to create public art for this historic neighborhood.
